Sickness & Veterinary care

Gut Stasis – is a medical emergency!

We often get asked by owners ” If my rabbit show’s signs of stasis / not eating please just give them recovery food or monitor them for 24hrs etc.

If we suspect your rabbit has stasis or early signs of, we will always encourage your bunny to eat by offering their favourite foods including herbs and treats.

Unfortunately, Gut Stasis is secondary to another issue – it maybe the stress of being in unfamiliar environment / away from home- but sometimes it turns out there is a medical reason behind it.

So, because we have a duty of care to your rabbit & in line with The Animal welfare Act 2006 (yes sections 4 & 9) off to the vets we go!

If your vets are local to us and they are open we will always endeavour to take them there. But if your vets are further away or not open, we will take them to our vet or an emergency out of hours vet.

Please see full details below:

If your rabbit becomes unwell during their stay with us and requires a visit to the vets and we are unable to take them to your registered vets:

We will take them to Companion care Vets in Burgess Hill. We use these Vets for our rabbits and they have two rabbit savvy vets, our vets are open seven days a week.

If your rabbit becomes unwell out of normal vet opening hours, we will take them to Coastways 24hr Vets in Brighton.  or Medivet 24-hour Vets in Forest Row East Sussex.

Please note we now charge for vet visits at the following rates.

These are additional costs on top of your vet’s bill

£15 for a visit to our local vet’s Companion care in Burgess Hill and £15 per follow up visit.

If your registered vet is within a 5-mile radius of us we will endeavour to take your rabbit there this will be at a charge of £15 per visit with a mileage of cost of 75pence per mile for every mile over 2 miles one way

If we need to take your rabbit to the emergency out of hours vet the following charges apply as it is a long journey (one hour plus round trip excluding the time we need to spend there for the vet consultation).

The charges are £30 per visit, this covers our time and travel costs.

Please note out of hours vet consultations can be really expensive and can start from approximately £165 to £250 excluding any required medication or treatment.

Medication prescribed by Your Vet, Our vet, or the Emergency vet

Any medication prescribed by the vet for your rabbit will be administered at an extra cost of £1.50 for a single medication per application and 50p per additional medication per application. This does not include syringe feeding

Please note.

Due to the intensity and difficulty of Syringe feeding some rabbits, we no longer offer this service. If your rabbit needs syringe feeding, they will be taken to an appropriate vet where they will receive daily or 24hr nursing care until they are well enough to eat of their own accord. If the vet considers your rabbit is not sick enough to admit them to the vet practice, but they require syringe feeding and nursing care carried out by us we will charge £50 per 24hr period or £5 per syringe feed depending on the amount needed.

Rabbits that are showing signs or are diagnosed with a contagious disease will be quarantined at the vets where they will receive veterinary care at additional cost to you the owners.

We will of course make every effort to inform you or your emergency contact first if this is required.

We do not refund for any remaining boarding fees and you the owner will be liable for all vet fees, including cremation and any costs incurred by us while caring for your rabbit that is not included in your original boarding costs.
